This project was born of my wife, Joanna's request for a book of flowers for her birthday. These pictures were all taken between January and April of 2017. The flowers came from our garden, friends gardens, the market, the trails we hike the pups on in Los Angeles and found on a four week trip to New Zealand.
As a young man I'd assisted Steve Lovi, an incredible photographer and botanical expert who took the most exquisite pictures of flowers in his house in north London. I was so humbled by his sensibility and eye that I never turned my camera towards a flower. When Joanna asked for a flower book I tried to find Steve through the internet to ask for any tips or advice, but sadly discovered that he'd passed in the almost thirty years since we last spoke. I thought of him often while creating this story, and of the impermanence of everything around us. Flowers are a celebration of life to be caught in such a fleeting moment, almost like a firework
