The People of the Simian Mountains

 

These images were made high in the Simian Mountains of Ethiopia in 1993, just a short time after the end of a brutal and long-running civil war. Mines still littered the countryside and the hardship of farming what was recently a battleground was evident everywhere. I was the first European that most of these villagers had ever met, and was treated with curiosity and kindness.
